Overview

Why this aircraft matters

Boeing extended and re-winged the 747 for the 747-8 programme, using GEnx engines and aerodynamic developments linked to the 787 era. The final 747 left the Everett factory in December 2022.

Size and design

The 76.3-metre fuselage is longer than the A380, while its 68.4-metre span is substantially narrower. Passenger capacity depends heavily on airline configuration.

At 76.3 metres long and 68.4 metres across, the 747-8 occupies a very different physical envelope from an everyday single-aisle airliner. Dimensions alone do not tell the entire story: payload, cabin volume and intended role determine how that space is used.

Operators and current status

Lufthansa, Korean Air, Air China, Atlas Air, UPS Airlines, Cargolux.

  • Longest operational passenger airliner variant at entry into service
  • Final member of the Boeing 747 family
